In the annual Great Backyard Bird Count, participants of all ages count birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. No previous birdwatching experience is required, the project is free, and the counting can take as little as 15 minutes. Participants count birds anywhere during the four-day period. They tally the highest number of birds of each species seen together at any one time. To report their counts, they complete an online checklist at www.birdsource.org/gbbc, which also offers a bird identification guide and tips for successful counts.
